England to Start Euro 2028 Journey at City’s Home Ground

England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward qualification for a competition taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.

City’s stadium has not staged an Three Lions game since the spring of 2016, when the Turkish team were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their inaugural game on Saturday 10 June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, should they win Group B, their last-16 tie would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Competition Launch and Rally

The championship was unveiled at an event in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were confronted as they entered the site by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel’s national side to be removed from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.

Placards were raised with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be staged at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a game that will feature Wales if they qualify.

Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a start time at 5pm.

It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be used for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to households and help reach a wider spectrum of viewers.

Participating Countries

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Scottish team would do the same at Hampden Park.

All four host countries’ teams will participate in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through that route.

Stadiums and Elimination Phase

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.

The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it was revealed Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.

Tournament Vision

“This will be a tournament for the supporters and a festival of everything we value about the football – its fervor and capacity to foster unity.”

In excess of three million admissions, a unprecedented number for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be made available to supporters.
