Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.
