A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the forty-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

The purpose of the shooting has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, as per the official statement.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities indicated that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building managing the setup of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the victim was approached by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and wearing what resembled a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the incident.

Crucial forensic evidence, like cartridges, were discovered at the scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to contact them.

"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to determine their whereabouts," added an official.

Outpouring of Grief

His family member, a close relative, said the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were ready to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She urged the public to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's children.

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a popular local broadcasting platform.

Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including protective services, providing elite guarding services and managing safety for major functions across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in building administration and was involved in property reclaimations.

His killing has sent the nation reeling and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the government and political parties.

A senior figure said he was angry and saddened by Stock's killing.

"He spoke his truth fearlessly and impartially. He even spoke up against me and my policies as a minister. He was a pure example of who we should be," he stated.

A political leader stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".

A media executive said that "DJ Warras was more than just a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a true devotee of sound and a warm soul who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."

In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will live on".
