🔗 Share this article Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites. When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker. His resolve and natural ability won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara. Overcoming Early Hurdles In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract. Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said. An Unforgettable Year and European Arrival This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named best player. Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration. Influences and On-Field Identity Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye. His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses a need to control his competitive fire, having been shown red early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes. Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said. Currently, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham. Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future. “The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.” Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
