The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined acronym came to light a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to health professionals like child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for physicians to treat a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities has denied these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, it seems, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
