The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
